AFTER THE INTRO: "What Would I Like Instead?"--The Art of NVC Requests
Next Steps in Compassionate Communication and Practicing the Art of Authentic Connection

When: Wednesdays (7:15 - 9:30 p.m.)--Sept. 3 & 17, Oct. 1 & 15
Where: Takoma Park, Maryland

Cost: $25 - $50 sliding scale for each workshop in this series*

Communicating honestly and compassionately is something most of us aspire to--it sounds so easy, right?

But putting into practice the four steps of Nonviolent Communication (NVC)--making observations instead of evaluations, guessing feelings and needs instead of articulating beliefs or strategies, and making requests instead of demands--takes more than reading Marshall Rosenberg's book or attending an introductory workshop.

It takes practice.

"After the Intro: Next Steps in Compassionate Communication" is a series of Wednesday evening workshops being offered this fall for people who want to put into practice the concepts they learned at the introduction to NVC they attended, receive coaching from an experienced trainer, and connect with other people who are learning how to apply NVC to their own lives.

In this innovative approach to deepening skills, each of the “Next Steps” sessions can be taken as a “stand-alone” workshop. At the same time, each session will consciously build on all previous sessions, therefore, those who can participate in several or all four sessions will be able to enjoy a layered, multifaceted experience of NVC.

Topics will include:

  • September 3: Hearing Life--No Matter What Is Said
  • September 17: Getting Clear with Ourselves, Being Honest with Others
  • October 1: "What Would I Like Instead?"--The Art of NVC Requests
  • October 15: Mastering the Empathy Obstacle Course

* All are invited to register for this event. We encourage you to contribute as high on the sliding scale as you are able to, with joy and ease. Some scholarship and work exchange opportunities will be available.

Lynd Morris is a graduate of the 2005 North America NVC Leadership Program and is a third-year student of the NVC LIFE Program. For more than three years she has led NVC classes and workshops in Maryland and Virginia and has participated in or served as assistant trainer at numerous NVC trainings across the United States. Lynd is a founding member of Capitol NVC and is a certification candidate with the global Center for Nonviolent Communication. In 1997, she was ordained as a lay member of Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing.

Jeanne Marcus is a graduate of the 2007 North America NVC Leadership Program, and is currently serving as an assistant trainer for the 2008 Leadership Program. She has participated or served as assistant trainer at NVC trainings in the U.S. and Canada. Since 2004, Jeanne has led numerous NVC classes in metro D.C., Maryland and Virginia. She also provides communication coaching based on NVC for individuals, couples and small groups. She is a founding member of Capitol NVC, and is a certification candidate with the global Center for Nonviolent Communication.
