RSVP: Email Lynd Morris

The LIFE Program offered by international CNVC-certified trainer Robert Gonzales includes four week-long intensive trainings in 2 years. The first two intensives focus on internal practices such as "Transforming the Pain of Unmet Needs and Dwelling in the Beauty of Needs" and "Compassionately Embracing Life." These processes are included in The Welcoming LIFE Program, our local version of the LIFE Program.

The new lcoal Communicating LIFE Program gives participants a taste of what Robert offers in the second year of the LIFE Program, focusing on relational practices. We continue deepening our connection with life while focusing on authentic dialogue: expressing honestly and compassionately under two of the most challenging situations—(1) when someone has done something that has triggered pain in us and (2) when we have done something that has triggered pain in someone else. Robert’s work continues to evolve and I will be sharing his new insights and processes as they develop and I integrate them into my own life.

I am fortunate to be part of the small international team that is working with Robert Gonzales to clarify and document his body of work…the Living Compassion Network. I will share with all of my programs insights I gain from working with this team.

The requested tuition for the Communicating LIFE Program is $200-$400 for each intensive (sliding scale based on the highest amount each registrant can contribute easily and joyfully). Registration for each workshop is independent of the other, and payment plans can be arranged for those needing them to participate.

This an advanced NVC program and is designed for people who have already attended the Welcoming LIFE Program (you are invited to apply for the next session of the Welcoming LIFE Program, if you have met the prior experience pre-requisites). To enhance intimacy and the depth of processing, enrollment for the Communicating LIFE Program is limited to 12 people.

Please send an email to Lynd Morris right away if you’d like to learn more about this opportunity to deepen your experience of NVC consciousness.

Sharing NVC Without Making People Hate It

When:
Sat, 02/18/2012 - 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Note: Actual date will be decided by polling those interested in attending who respond prior to Feb. 9. See below.

There are ways that we can think we're "doing NVC" when we're actually doing the opposite, acting in a way that is not aligned with NVC consciousness. When this happens, it can be a big turn-off, leading people to hate what they think is NVC. This is particularly tragic when in happens in a context where we're trying to teach NVC to others. I know this never happens for you, but I'm sure it does for some people somewhere.

Even in the more common cases when we're not doing anything that stimulates an extreme reaction like hatred, there is often a gap between our understanding NVC and really living it as we try to share NVC with others. I'd love for us all to become more skilled at actually living NVC as we share it, because I believe that's the most effective way of transmitting the gifts this practice has to offer.

In this workshop, we'll look at what challenges us when we're trying to share NVC with others, and work together to try to learn how to show up in ways that more effectively convey NVC consciousness. We might, for example, consider questions like:

  • To what extent do we feel that NVC offers the "right" way of doing things, and how do our beliefs about this show up?
  • What might those we cast in the role of "students" (or peers) do that trigger us, "hooK' us, leading us to judge, and to want to correct or fix what they're doing?
  • How do we engage someone who's not doing what we think they "should" be doing?
  • What have you seen others do in the name of NVC that you haven't enjoyed?
  • How do you offer others feedback?

I envision us doing role-plays, offering us opportunities to:

  • Experiment with different ways of handling situations
  • Experience what it's like to be on the receiving end of different approaches
  • Bring to the surface the unspoken dynamics of what people might be thinking when interactions get challenging

Perhaps we'll also have a chance to become more aware of what goes on inside us, and to examine and possibly transform core beliefs that affect how we show up.

Let's come prepared to experiment and discover together, in the interests of learning to practice and share NVC in a deeper way.

This workshop is intended for those who have an interest in sharing NVC with others, whether in a formal workshop format, or less formally.  Participants should have a fairly solid grounding in NVC already.  This session is associated with Capital NVC's Local Leadership Program.

Why Can't We Talk? And Other Big Questions

When:
Sun, 02/19/2012 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Where:  Takoma Park, MD

What:  A few years ago I often found myself asking "Why can't we talk?' or "Why won't he listen?" and sometimes even "What's wrong with me/them/us?"  These are pretty big questions but I started getting some answers when I went to my first Nonviolent Communication (NVC) workshop.

Nonviolent Communication (tm) refers to the theory and practices based on Marshall Rosenberg's work presented in "Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life".  Basic NVC theory is not hard to understand, and from the very first workshop, I could use my learning in real-life situations.

My NVC journey has been rich, and I'd like to share some of what I learned.

Since I love exercises, and seeing how the practice can work with the words that people really say, we will do several in this 3-hour workshop.  Those who wish to use this workshop as a pre-requisite for The Learning NVC Program series offered by Lynd Morris in March may stay for an extra hour of informal practice at the end of the workshop.

Please email or call with questions, or to register:  workshopreg [at] gmail [dot] com (subject: Workshop%20Feb%2019) or 301 270 8754.

I'm asking $20-$5 for the workshop, please choose the amount that you can pay with ease.

Financial Integrity - Group Formed

When:
Thu, 02/23/2012 - 7:00pm

The group that is forming from the Manske Nov 2011 Financial Integrity workshop met on January 27 and plans to meet monthly in the future.  (It will not be announced as an event in the future.)  Write to janemconnor [at] gmail [dot] com if you are interested in joining the group, which is designed to support people attempting to follow the program outlined in "Your Money or Your Life" 9-step program and book by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez.

Facilitation of this group will rotate.  We will have a short program and check-ins each time.

In January we spent time talking about what each of us wanted and how we each wanted support.  Each of us had a chance to clarify goals and what would support us, and so  several of us are checking in with others between meetings.

The next meeting will at 7:00 pm, February 23, and at a Silver Spring location, less than 15 minutes walk from Metro.

What's a cuddle party?
by Ryan McAllister, who will be facilitating this event
A cuddle party is a brief workshop on boundaries, consent, sensing what you want, and choice-fully saying no and yes. Followed by the option to invite or not invite others to cuddle with you. The format for all-grown up versions was created by a well-established group of facilitators who I respect: http://www.cuddleparty.com/faq/. They've given me encouragement to create a family-inclusive version of the event. We plan to conclude our NVC gathering with an opt-in cuddle party that adults, and children with their responsible adults will be welcome to join.

Potluck Lunch and Snacks:
If you would enjoy doing so, we invite you to bring a potluck lunch or snack item. The healthier the better. No alcohol, please.

Helping Out
We welcome volunteers to help setup before and cleanup after the event. Come 30 min earlier or stay 30 min later for tidying.

Other Considerations
• Maitri House intends to be a place safe for people with chemical sensitivities. So please do not bring or wear fragrances or smoke-producing products.
• Maitri House has a dog, who can be in a separate space during the event. Still, dog allergies may be an issue for some.
• While we wish it were different in this aspect, the space is not currently well-adapted for wheelchairs. If you use a wheelchair and would like to come, contact Ryan at ryan [at] notjustskin [dot] org and we can describe the limitations of the space and hear from you what we can do to make it as workable/enjoyable as possible for you to attend.

A Taste of Nonviolent Communication

When:
Fri, 03/16/2012 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) offers powerful tools and perspectives to support:

  • ease and flow in your interactions with people
  • talking about subjects you've avoided or fought about in ways that bring you closer
  • kindness for yourself and others
  • empowerment to live your values and have more of what matters to you

Experiencing these benefits  involves making an inner shift that allows us to think differently, and show up differently.  Learning to make this shift involves ideas, experience, awareness, and intention. These increase inner clarity and open-heartedness. With these, we can speak naturally, without focusing on formulas, and we and others are likely to enjoy the results.

This two-hour experiential workshop offers a taste of new tools, insights, and practices that support an inner shift to a more peaceful and enlivened way of being and relating. While fuly realizing these benefits takes more learning and an ongoing practice, this workshop offers a place to start.

Who This is For

This workshop is intended anyone interested in taking initial steps towards living a more satisfying life.  It's also for those without prior experience with Nonviolent Communication who are interested in attending the subsequent Skills for a Happy Relationship weekend workshop.

Juggling commitments at work and with families and friends, as well as needs for rest and renewal, it can become increasingly challenging to welcome the opportunities we encounter in our lives unless we are connected to what it is that gives us life: the vitality and nourishment present at the center of our longings.

Connecting to the living energy that manifests as needs and then learning how to integrate and embody this energy in our daily lives is at the heart of a series of practices developed by international NVC trainer Robert Gonzales as part of the transformational LIFE Program he began leading in 2006 and now offers in Europe as well as the United States. LIFE is an acronym Robert uses for Living and Integrating, Full Embodiment.

But not as many people who want to attend the LIFE Program can afford to take time off for several retreats each year or make the financial commitment to attend a residential program that may be far from home. In 2010, Robert and I created the Welcoming LIFE Program, a series of local workshops that give commuters the chance to taste the same practices Robert offers through his LIFE Program, at a fraction of the cost in time or money.

I led the Welcoming LIFE Program (WLP) twice in 2010 and will offer it again in 2012. In experimenting with ways to make this program increasingly accessible to those who want to participate in it, I have modified its format for 2012 so we will meet for 2 weekend trainings, with one or more teleconference calls held between these workshops and with weekly empathy sessions (by telephone or in person) among participants.

Both workshops will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The dates of each workshop and the date/time of the teleconference call(s) will be determined by those enrolling using an online poll.

Please note: Enrolling in this program is dependent on committing to attend both workshops for the full time of each workshop, barring unexpected or unavoidable emergencies.

The requested tuition for the Welcoming LIFE Program is $400-$800 (sliding scale based on the highest amount each registrant can contribute easily and joyfully). Payment plans can be arranged for those needing them to participate.

This an intermediate-advanced NVC program and is designed for people who have already attended more than 25 hours of formal NVC training, with more than 6 months of practicing NVC at work/home. To enhance intimacy and the depth of processing, enrollment in the Welcoming LIFE Program will be limited.

Please send an email to me, Lynd Morris, if you’d like to receive an application for this program or would like to learn more about this opportunity to deepen your experience of NVC consciousness. I will be away from my computer from August 27th to September 9th, but will send you an application as soon as I return.

Skills for a Happy Relationship

When:
Sat, 03/17/2012 - 10:00am - Sun, 03/18/2012 - 5:30pm

Intimate relationships can be wonderful, contributing to the quality of our lives in profound ways. Many of us are partnered, and many of us wish we were. Yet, all too often, relationships don't live up to our fantasies of what we wish for. Often, we imagine that things might be better with a different partner. But those who move on to a different partner often find old patterns repeating. Whatever relationship we are in, we bring ourselves -- and our assumptions about relationships and strategies for navigating them. What if we could have happier relationships by changing a few things about the way we ourselves show up in our relationships?

The intensive experiential weekend workshop is intended to support participants in learning ideas and skills that can greatly increase the chances of enjoying close relationships. The focus will be primarily on intimate/romantic relationships, but the learnings are likely to have relevance to other types of close relationships as well.

Deep learning tends to happen when we pay attention to what is "alive" for participants who show up to the workshop, and guide what happens accordingly. So, the contents of the workshop will evolve dynamically. However, it's likely that focuses may include topics such as:

  • Getting centered and adjusting your energy when emotions start to heat up
  • Listening to ourself, and listening to our partner, in ways that are loving towards even things we've in the past found hard to like
  • Shifting from jockying for who is going to get their way to collaboration based on knowing that it only works if it works for both of us
  • Understanding the "Vortex of Submission" and how "giving in" is likely to be destructive to a relationship and standing up for oneself can serve the relationship
  • Shifting from doing things with an expectation of getting something in return to doing things out of enjoying contributing
  • Making conscious choices to do things that support happiness, instead of being lost in unconscious patterns
  • Becoming aware of core beliefs and core wounds that distort our ability to love and be loved, and setting the stage for shifting/healing these
  • How inner-awareness and kindness can catalyze change
  • The value of getting clearer about what really matters to us and advocating powerfully for this while being flexible about strategies

The workshop will offer conceptual insights, experiential learning, and plenty of opportunities to practice and work with what's going on in your own life.

Please join us!

Testimonial

Our marriage, partnership and the love between M. and me are balanced wonderfully again. You guided us through our jungle of misunderstandings and judgments to a loving and sunny place where we truly enjoy our marriage again.

  • I am able to see the world through the eyes of my wife and I am realizing that the way she perceive the world is beautifully different. It is enjoyable and alleviating alike when things do not have to be "my way".
  • I enjoy doing things because they come from my heart and not from the expectation of getting something in return from others.
  • I enjoy going to the calm, beautiful and safe place you showed us. It's a very sacred space and a source of infinite divine energy.

I feel very thankful that you came into our life and that you taught us a new language that enables us to communicate compassionately with each other. —C., after a series of private couple's sessions with Bob

We are happy to arrange payment plans if this will enable you to participate or to contribute higher on the scale. Applicants must have attended at least 4 hours of prior NVC training such as the “Compassionate Communication" workshop scheduled for January 8, 2012.
